Leadership Spotlight

Bill Dean

Our Leadership feature this week is Vice President, Bill Dean.  Bill joined as a Realtor® Member in 2017.  Before being elected Vice President, Bill had served 2 years on the Board of Directors and has served on the Government Affairs Committee for the past 6 years as either the Vice Chair or Chair.  In addition to Government Affairs, Bill has been active on the Building Task Force, FlexMLS Task Force, and was a committee member of the Cloud Crowd.

Bill’s journey to becoming a Realtor® started 14 years prior when he worked in the construction industry and then Property Management.

His knowledge and expertise along with the recommendation from the Realtor® he was using at the time; he decided to take the leap and hit the ground running upon joining.

Bill’s philosophy in participating in a leadership capacity stems from the principle that “if you’re not at the table, you’re the menu.”  You are going to get what you give.  Bill is a firm believer in Pretto’s principle, also known as the 80/20 Rule. Which is defined as the philosophy 80% of outcomes (outputs) come from 20% of causes (inputs).  Based on these philosophies and his office did not have representation at the Board Level, Bill decided to run for the Board.

When asked how serving on the Board benefited you personally and professionally, he stated that “nothing but good things have happened” since being elected to the Board.  He shared that his network has expanded, he has met other constituents, and his whole perception of what a Realtor® does has changed.  It’s more than just buying and selling, it’s lobbying at the State and National level, and so much more.

When asked what advice you would give someone considering running for a board position, Bill said “Do it! You have to give it a try. Even making the decision to run will make you a better leader.”

Bill’s passion for servant leadership extends beyond serving on the Bismarck Mandan Board, he is also a member of the Minot Board of Realtors, an Area Director for a Master Networks Group, and served on the Board of Directors for two years with the Bismarck Optimist Club.
